Pesquisa com células-tronco mira paraplegia Research with stem cells targeting paraplegia

Testing the sensitivity of recovered animals. Now, treatment is being performed on 20 volunteers in Bahia

After four years of tests in domestic animals, a novel therapy to restore sensitivity to victims of spinal cord injury - injury that causes impairment of function of the spinal cord - is beginning to be tested on humans in Bahia.

The treatment, developed by researchers from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz-BA), in partnership with the San Rafael Hospital and Spanish and the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), involves the application of mesenchymal stem cells, taken from bone marrow of the basin patients themselves, directly on the region where the trauma.

The procedure was first tested in two cats in early 2007. They had no sensitivity or control the muscles of the abdomen to the tail. In one month, regained sensitivity. One of them came back to stand on four legs 15 days after initiation of treatment. A total of ten domestic animals, including dogs and cats were undergoing the procedure. All had completely lost the movements of the lower limbs after trauma.

Monitored for a year, they recovered the sensibility of the limbs and bladder control. Most also came to stand on four legs and some rehearsed steps.

Military police

The first human patient was a military policeman for 45 years, who lost the sensitivity of the lower five years ago after falling from the roof. He received a cell culture, cultivated for one month in the last 14 days. Now, go through two physiotherapy sessions daily, and is being monitored.

Besides him, 19 volunteers will be tested, at this stage, you must follow to the end of the year. Patients are selected based on a very specific profile, which includes items such as blunt trauma (without exposure of bone), occurred more than six months and resulted in complete paraplegia.
